Reassessing “Quality of Life”

As Febe’s mother shared, “Febe is the happiest child in our family.” The concept of “quality of life” in the context of trisomy conditions must be reconsidered and broadened beyond assumptions based on a diagnosis alone, or narrow definitions focused solely on abilities such as walking and talking. It should also recognize the profound ways in which disabled children enrich the lives of those in the communities around them.
Many trisomy families speak of the unique wisdom, depth, and unconditional love these children bring into their homes and families—shaping relationships, fostering empathy, and redefining what it means to live a meaningful life, grounded in mutual respect for one another and for the world we share.
